Here's How A Minister's Daughter Went From 20 Years Of Distance With Her Own Father To Spending 40+ Years Helping Families Find Their Way Back To Each Other

Dear Estranged Parent,
From: The desk of Catherine Taylor Hickem
Re: The silence (and why it isn't the end of your story)
Catherine Taylor Hickem
Catherine Taylor Hickem, LCSW — psychotherapist, family & executive coach, author of Regret Free Parenting

If you haven't heard your adult child's voice in months — or years — I want you to hear one sentence before anything else:

Your child is not coming back on their own. And that is not the end of the story.

I know, because I was the child on the other side of the silence.

For the first five years of my life, I had an amazing dad. He was a minister — tender, sweet, gentle. Bedtime stories every night.

Then one Sunday evening, five-year-old me quietly walked a visiting little girl to the bathroom in the middle of his sermon. He stopped. And in front of the whole congregation he said: "Cathy Taylor, you sit down and don't you ever do that again."

My heart had been to help somebody. But in that moment, my relationship with my father changed. The bedtime stories stopped. He became distant and hard — and for the next ten years, my goal in my own home was to be invisible.

At fifteen, I made an appointment with his church secretary — four o'clock on a Monday — to talk about our relationship. He said, "Get out of here. Go home."

We didn't have that conversation for another ten years.

At twenty-five — after college, marriage, graduate school, and years of my own therapy — I tried one more time. I told him: "I want a relationship with you, but it can't be the way we've always had it." And my father looked at me and said:

"Cath, I made a lot of mistakes with you. I can't undo those. The only thing I can do is give you my word that I will be the dad that you need — and not the dad that you had."

For the next thirty-three years, I had the most amazing father. Interested in who I was. Respectful of my boundaries. Fully present.

And those years taught me the two truths this book is built on:

1. It is never too late to grow and change.
2. It only takes ONE person to change a relationship — and since you're the one reading this, you get to be that one.

I've spent over forty years as a psychotherapist (I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker) and more than twenty as a family and executive coach, sitting with families in their hardest moments. I've written about parenting before — my book Regret Free Parenting was about raising young children with intention. This book is about what nobody prepared us for: the relationship after they're grown. And here's what all those years showed me about estrangement:

Estrangement isn't a communication problem. It's a safety problem.

Your child isn't staying away because they need more time. They're staying away because nothing has changed that makes contact feel emotionally safe. That's why the letters go unanswered. That's why "giving them space" only hardens the silence. And that's why therapy — which treats this like a communication problem — so often fails.

The P.A.R.E.N.T. Method rebuilds that safety deliberately, step by step, starting with you, not them — which means you can begin today, even in total silence.

One honest thing before you spend even $9: this book will not bring your child back by Friday. Reconciliation is slow work. And if what you're really looking for is proof that you were right and your child is ungrateful — this isn't your book. The method asks more of us than that.

But if you're ready to stop waiting and start walking a real path back — I wrote this for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
My child has been gone more than a year. Is it too late?
Length of silence changes the pacing, not the method. The book's diagnostics account for long-term, no-contact estrangement specifically — and Catherine's own story is proof that even decades can turn.
My spouse isn't on board. Can I do this alone?
Yes. It only takes one person to change a relationship — the method is designed for one parent to begin, and there's a full chapter on the couples dynamic.
Is this religious?
[Confirm positioning with Catherine's team and answer honestly here.]
When do I get the printed book?
It ships at official release in August; you get the ebook and audiobook the minute you order.
Will anyone contact me?
No. Your order is private, the charge is discreet, and no one will ever reach out about your family unless you ask.
What if it doesn't help?
Email info@parentingadultchildrentoday.com within 30 days for a full refund inside 24 hours. You keep everything.

P.S. — Catherine waited twenty years for the conversation that changed everything with her own father — and it happened because one person decided to lead. You've been waiting for a sign that it's the right time to try again. This is one. The book is $9, you'll be reading it in two minutes, and the only thing you're risking is one more month of silence.
